Effective Sleep Therapy in Wakefield, MA
You are exhausted
You are so freaking tired. Not in a fall-asleep-while-standing-up kind of way, but in a “how is everyone around me still going after 1pm?” kind of way. You feel like if you had a better battery, you could do more with your day, you could be kinder to others more consistently and basically be better all around. When you take medicine it helps you sleep but you feel groggy and you don’t like being on it in principle. Without it though, you are tossing and turning or scrolling endlessly.. You know there are things you can try to make yourself sleep better, but who really does all of them? Who doesn’t watch tv or screens in the bedroom?!
You are desperate for a change
You feel like people are noticing that you don’t have anything left to give by the end of the day. You worry that you are going to have consequences at work or in relationships because it’s so hard to keep up with everything when you feel like you are running on empty.
My name is Michelle, and I can help
I help people who are struggling with their sleep to regain control of their sleeping hours. Together, we will explore what you have tried and what has not felt like a match for your lifestyle and values. Then, we will develop a plan to tinker with some key dynamics that are known to improve sleep and make sure we personalize them to you and your life.. By making these adjustments, you will experience more calmness and readiness approaching sleep and get better rest that sustains you through your waking hours.
I have been enthralled by sleep since adolescence, when I had my own share of bizarre sleep experiences. My fascination with sleep led me into studying psychology and ultimately neuroscience in college. As my personal and professional lives have evolved through periods of easier and more challenging sleep (hello parenting and mid-life), I have continued to fall back on my early neuroscience training to maintain peace with my own sleep and to guide my clients to find peace with theirs. To further blend my academic, personal and professional experiences with sleep, I extended my training and obtained certification CBT-I, or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia.
People are often seeing me for therapy for other reasons as we start to include more work directly on their sleep challenges. Others are welcome to join me for therapy specifically to address their sleep concerns. Either way, my commitment is to help you find sustainable relief from your sleep struggles, more peace and better rest.

Sleep hygiene (or how you ensure that your body knows it’s time for sleep by cleaning up your routines and habits around sleep) is a critical element of restful sleep, yet sleep therapy goes beyond sleep hygiene. In therapy for sleep, we dig into the thought patterns and behavior patterns throughout your day that can interfere with sleep, assess for underlying medical factors contributing to sleep and explore creative ways of changing your sleeping hours to reset your sleep and get you back to feeling rested.

Most people can benefit from both. Sleep disruption is extremely common with almost all mental health conditions, easily becoming disrupted by trauma, depression, anxiety and OCD. Similarly, disrupted sleep can worsen mood, heighten anxiety and cause problems in social relationships. As a therapist, I approach them as rather intertwined, focusing on each as it becomes most important in the course of therapy.

Both! Especially for caregivers, both formats can be really helpful. Being physically removed from home and your usual routines by coming into the office can be a huge relief. Other times, being able to video-in from a parking lot, office or home can be a practical reality. We can do what works best for you!
